It started with lethargy and a cough that wouldn't quit. Our little dachshund Harvey wasn't himself, and we knew something was wrong. Our local vet diagnosed him with pneumonia, and we trusted that — but weeks passed and Harvey wasn't getting better. We made the decision to take him to the emergency clinic, and that's where everything changed.

Harvey had a lung lobe torsion — a serious condition that required immediate intervention. But that turned out to be only part of the story. The deeper issue, the one that had been quietly causing damage all along, was a gastrointestinal condition called Malabsorption of the upper intestine. Harvey's body simply can't digest food the way it should, and without management, fluid builds up in his chest and abdomen. It's a condition he'll live with for the rest of his life.

We have four kids, and Harvey is every bit as much a part of this family as any of them. He's not a pet — he's one of ours.

When we shared Harvey's story on TikTok, we weren't sure what would happen. What happened was nothing short of incredible. Strangers from all over came together, donated, shared, and cheered for a little dachshund they'd never met. Together, the community raised $22,000 through GoFundMe — and it made his treatment possible. Without that outpouring of generosity, we would have faced an impossible choice. We simply didn't have the money to cover his care, and we would have had to say goodbye to him. The people who showed up for Harvey saved his life. There is no other way to say it.
